Brecon Beacons - March 2019.

After a short drive from home we were met with perfect weather in this unfamiliar part of Wales. With only a few days to explore we had spent weeks prior to the trip building a map of spots we wanted to take a gander at, the first being the Caerfanell valley. Our first couple of hours and we were hooked.

This series of waterfalls was a great find and we had the trail to ourself, the loop can’t of taken us much longer than an hour of actual walking but prizing us away from these vistas would have been difficult.

After a short hike we headed back to the van and drove to the trail car park at Pen y Fan with a sunrise hike planned for the morning. An impromptu sunset hike was also on the cards, with beer, cracking end to the day.

It’s a deceptively tough climb up Pen y Fan, a relentless incline from the get-go until you reach the top of the hill (just a few feet short of mountain status apparently!). We hiked the majority of it in the dark and, had we of not climbed it the night before, we would have had no idea what we had in store, a serene sunrise with the peaks to ourselves (and a few dog walkers).

The next couple of days and nights consisted of good weather, scenic hikes to waterfalls, clear night skies and toasty camp fires. The icing on top of the cake was the van not breaking down once.
